This is the first installment of The Fresh Spot, where I will be featuring vendors that I adore. For this feature I came across an amazing company called Mama’s Sauce, they are a boutique letterpress and silkscreen print shop using solely eco-friendly inks and recycled papers. I am absolutely obsessed with letter press printing and find it to be such a great art, so who better than the fabulous Brooks to show me around Mama’s Sauce and fill me in on the process. Here are some pictures of the super cool shop, and some of their amazing design work and printing they have done. The are located in Orlando but will design , print and ship internationally. I can hardly wait to get my new business cards printed !
A BIG thanks to Brooks for showing me around!
The Invitation suite above was designed at Mama’s Sauce for Brooks and his wife Allison’s wedding. It is so great to see such creativity and personality go into a wedding invitation! The suite above was designed by Brian Boesch of Itchy Illustration and printed at Mama’s Sauce. This invite was designed by Sean Callen and printed at Mama’s Sauce
Here are a few things about Mama’s Sauce!
First off, you gotta tell me how you came up with the name Mama’s Sauce?
Well, the roots of the Sauce are 100% Italian. The three Italian fellas who founded Mama’s Sauce used to run things out of a house and all the ink-mixing happened in the kitchen…obviously. In the midst of one particularly long late-night print session, one of them saw a big blue bowl of chunky, red, reclaimed screen printing ink and, well, you get the picture.
When you were little, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I’m not sure what each of us had in mind when we were little tikes, but what brought us all together was a common drive to make music. Almost everyone who works at the shop got to know each other through being in bands or managing bands (with varying degrees of success). What we’ve all landed on is that we love doing something really special and doing it really well.
Letter pressing is such a great old art, how did Mama’s Sauce get started?
Letterpress is a rabbit hole…in a good way. The first time you see one of these machines, you start falling and you don’t stop. For us, that looked like buying a whole bunch of presses from old print shops that had outlived their noble proprietors. Lots of trial and error ensued, but that sense of wonder kept us coming back for more.
What inspires and influences your designs and artwork?
There’s a mile-long list of designers and artists that get us all excited about doing what we do, but more than anything else, it comes down to our printing processes. We are deeply inspired by the history and power of spot color printing. Brands and ideas have leaned into these processes for hundreds of years for their expression. It’s pretty neat how a means of expression can also be a muse for expression.
Who is your ideal client?
Our ideal client is any bride, company, or individual who is open to getting as excited about the process as they are about the finished product.
What else is available at Mama’s Sauce?
We offer letterpress, screen printing, and design services. Ultimately, though, we work with clients to leverage all of our capabilities toward realizing their vision. Sometimes, that means lots of experimentation and reverse engineering that doesn’t fall under the umbrella of our advertised services. Honestly, my favorite service we offer is ownership. We adopt every project as our own and get 100% behind it…like any good Mama would.
